An Ongoing Search for a Sense of Home

A very large body of work, created over four years, that explores house-studded vistas. Through the image of the house, Chefetz embarked on an investigation into the notion of belonging, a process that began in March 2020 with the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. The house, as both a symbol and a subject, has accompanied him ever since, laying the foundation for a broader artistic engagement with ideas of place.

Within this extensive body of work, Chefetz established a distinct visual language grounded in the oscillation between extremes. This movement is reflected in the paintings: depictions of architecture versus nature, figurative representations alongside abstract interpretations, frenetic palette knife smears as well as meticulous brush strokes. These, and other contrasts identified in the paintings, reveal qualities which are only seemingly contradictory: soft and rough, real and fictitious, proximate and alienated. This motion, toward the union of polar opposites, becomes a material that directs the process of research and creation.
